Level 2 class outline
Day One: Review of Transformational Change
    * Overview of the program
    * The process of transformational change, what is it?
    * The essential elements of change
    * The treatment plan: assessment, goal setting, interventions, and evaluation
    * The use of positive energy in transformation: making contact, bringing hope, finding and validating resources, utilizing life energy
    *  Skill development

Day Two: Transformational Change
    * Changing the impact, not the event
    * Making therapy experiential and systemic
    * Experiencing yearnings as a precursor to change
    * Accessing subconscious impacts in the subconscious
    * Anchoring changes in past, present and future and interpsychically
    * Skill development

Day three: Transformational Change and Use of Self of the Therapist
    * The cycle of change, the 5As
    * The role of congruence in facilitating change
    * Making contact with the person, not the symptom
    * Accessing positive intentions under dysfunctional patterns
    * Resolving unmet expectations, changing perceptions, and transforming feelings
    * Skill development

Days Four, Five and Six: Resolving family of Origin Impacts Utilizing Satir Tools including the Iceberg, Sculpting, and Family Reconstruction
    * Utilizing the family map to access unresolved family of origin issues
    * Exploring the role of family of origin patterns in present day relationships
    * Transforming and reclaiming resources
    * Practicing facilitating sculpting and transformational processes to access and resolve family of origin issues
    * Integrating the changes into present relationships
    * Applying family reconstruction to individual therapy settings
    * Skill development

Days Seven, Eight, and Nine: Symptoms as Opportunities for Growth: working with Depression, Grief or Suicide
    * Accessing the client’s life energy  for growth
    * Helping clients choose and commit to life
    * Understanding and treating depression
    * Treating the person, not the symptom

About the Trainers


Dr John Banmen, R Psych. has an international reputation as an author and educator, training thousands for therapists across the globe. He has taught in Canada, the Czech Republic, China, Hong Kong, Korea, Malayasia, Singapore, Slovakia, Taiwan, Thailand, Venezuela and USA. He has co-authored The Satir Model: Family Therapy and Beyond and received the AAMFT/Satir Research and Education Prize in 1994. His publication credits include two Satir Meditation books, guest editor of Satir Today, a special issue of Contemporary Family Therapy Journal, and editing Satir Transformational Systemic Therapy, Applications of the Satir Model, and In Her Own Words: Virginia Satir, 1963-1983. He is a founder of and the international consultant on the editorial board of The Satir Journal.

Dr Banmen is the founding president of the British Columbia Association for Marriage and Family Therapy; a former member of the board of Directors of the American Association for Marriage and Family therapy (AAMFT); a recent member of the Board of Directors of the British Columbia Psychological Association and of Satir Global Network, the Director of Training for the Satir Institute of the Pacific; and a retired professor from University of British Columbia and a trainer with Virginia Satir at the Satir International Summer Institute for ten years.  He is presently an Associate Professor at the University of Hong Kong.

Gloria Taylor, MA, RMFT hails from Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario where she is in private practice as a marriage and family therapist, supervisor and consultant with 30 years of experience.  She trained with Virginia Satir and later VS’s training triad, Banmen, Gerber and Gomori, developing her own expertise and international reputation as a facilitator of “focused” family reconstructions, of which she has done 100s.  She is the founder and past president of the Satir Learning Center of Ontario, organizer of numerous conferences and workshops hosting the greats of the profession, and supervises marriage and family therapists.  She is on the faculty of Waterloo Lutheran Seminary where she facilitates family reconstructions.

Gloria authored “Family Reconstruction” in Satir Transformational Systemic Therapy and was a contributor to In Her Own Words: Virginia Satir 1963-1983. She has presented Satir workshops in the USA, Latvia, Malta, Cuba, Canada, and most recently, the People’s Republic of China.

As a recent graduate of the Mastery of Self Expression and the Abyss, Gloria is passionate about sharing her expertise about what she calls “Changing from the Inside.” Living, learning and growing in compassion are a way of life for Gloria and she is committed to taking this message to as many people as possible particularly during these very complex times.

Sandy Novak, MS, MA, SEP, LPC brings her thirty five years of teaching experience and twenty years of learning and teaching the Satir Model.  She holds masters degrees in education and counseling psychology and a certificate in family therapy as well as extensive other training, including the two year Module 1 and 2 of the International Satir Training Institute.  She has been in private practice for 20 years, specializing in treating couples and trauma.

She is a new faculty member of Tongji University in Shanghai, offering supervision to Satir Therapists in China and a longtime faculty member of the Satir Global Network.  She has taught Satir in Eastern Europe, Hong Kong, China, Canada, and the United States.  She presented a professional paper at an Oxford University Round Table in July, 2005. She has several journal articles in publication and is a contributor to the new book release, In Her Own Words… Virginia Satir, Selected Papers 1963-1983.   She founded the Satir Institute of the Rockies in Boulder.  Currently she teaches Satir Model workshops in the People’s Republic of China on parenting, couples’ intimacy, and designing experiential workshops several times a year.  She is the recipient of this year’s Living Treasure Award given for lifetime contribution by the Satir Global Network.
